Weather Halos: Sun and Moon

Weather halos are produced by ice crystals high in cirrus clouds 3-6 miles above the earth.  Light passes through ice crystals, appearing as a halo.  When they appear, they are usually seen around the sun or the moon, but might appear elsewhere in the sky.  The can also form around artificial lights like light pole lights.   But the weather needs to be very cold and  ice crystals called “diamond dust” need to be floating in the nearby air.

  1. Daddy says:

    Leah,

I know a halo you forgot about! The one on your head my little angel! Love you and good work my future meteorologist!

  2. I liked the halo’s, especially the one in Stockholm, pretty cool.
